During the first years of life, the brain develops at a faster pace than in any other developmental stage. Early environments matter, and nurturing relationships are essential. From birth to age 5 children rapidly develop foundational capabilities on which subsequent development builds. In addition to their remarkable linguistic and cognitive gains, they exhibit dramatic progress in their emotional, social and regulatory capacities. All of these dimensions are tied together, and each of them requires focus and attention.
In Mexico there are 11 million children under the age of 5, 56% of them live in poverty. Current public offer of childcare services is highly insufficient, public services cover only 12% of children between 0 and 3 years old, only 57% of children between 3-5 years attend pre-school, and pre school schedules are not adapted to the current reality of the communities, 82% of mothers with children aged 1-4 years earn less MXN$ 6,000 a month (around USD $300) which is the minimum income necessary to live above the poverty line. 91% of these children have no access to social security.
Working moms (parents) face an extremely difficult situation to decide where to leave their children while they are at work: alone or with a relative, usually without proper attention (old or sick grandparent, young and inexperienced sibling, etc.), or in a “guardería” (daycare) where abuse and neglect are common practices. Either of these options causes significant delays in the development of the child.
For solving this problem, Hipocampus Centros de Aprendizaje objective is to provide superior and affordable community driven early childcare and education in Mexico. Hipocampus own and operate best practice learning centers focused on children from 4 months to 6 years old. To support working moms and provide a service affordable to most families, they partner with corporates to establish centers fully adapted to their needs and employ local women as community educators.
